Your real Protein requirements - Sifting through the garbage by Jason Rickaby

Your real Protein requirements

Sifting through the garbage

By Jason Rickaby- Author/Published columnist/Lifetime Natural Body builder

One memory remains vivid from my days as a beginning body builder. It was dual-acting hammer blow to my brain, one to confuse the most hardened of eager young muscle-seekers. In the gym one day, after a chest and back session and I picked up an old muscle magazine with the seminal Robby Robinson hitting a back double bicep on the cover. Inside was an article on how Robby ate for his contest wins back in the70’s and 80’s. Rewind back an hour and I’d just been accosted by the gym Neanderthal as I planned my diet for the week in the meticulous diary I used to keep.

“You need miles more protein than that young ‘un” he bellowed, through a mouthful of tuna.
“Eat small and stay small” was his motto, as I examined the suspicious bloated face and acne-scarred arms.
“But I don’t want to look like you” I thought, yet dare not speak aloud.
“400 grams of protein a day mate, that’s what you need to get big, I eat 500grams but am twice your size, so 400 should be OK for you”.

Ok, I thought this hulk must be right, so back I went into my diary and doubled the eggs, doubled the tuna and looked forward to getting big!

Back to 1 hour later and Robby Robinson, a guy I “did” want to look like, who wouldn’t?

The article must have been wrong though, because in it Robby stated he only ate 4 times per day and about 160 grams to 200 grams of protein. He also ate fresh fruit and lots of vegetables, something the big guy didn’t mention. So what do I do?

Fast forward to the present day and I laugh at how I used to eat. I can remember going through a period of religiously eating 450 grams of protein per day and 5000 calories. Sounds bizarre to think I used to eat that way, but it’s true, we all do daft things when young and impressionable. The 5000 calories made me bigger, it also rid my physique of any aesthetics I had, lost me my abs and made trips to the toilet an hourly thing. I had constant wind and my stomach was always bloated.

When I dieted for the BNBF Britain finals in 2004 I achieved my best-ever physical shape. My skin was paper thin and my body fat about as low as any human could go. I achieved this look as well as maintaining most of my strength in the gym, on about 225 grams of protein daily.

Now we all know that PhD Nutrition are a sports supplement company and yes, we sell a great protein powder called Pharma-Whey™. Like other supplement companies I could tell you to use this 5 times daily on top of your meals, but I’d be no better than the gym idiot who filled me full of poor advice 12 years ago. I still aim to eat about 200 grams of protein per day and my daily schedule dictates that I can only usually sit down for meals maybe 2-3 times daily. This means I get probably 3 of my protein servings from Pharma-whey™. One of these servings will always be at breakfast, poured over some healthy muesli (best meal of the day), the next sitting will be after I train, with 4-5 scoops of Battery+/-3™. Finally the last serving of the day will usually be before bed, with a handful of almonds, or combo of fish and flax oil capsules and maybe some fruit.

There are many companies out there and indeed many individuals with something to sell, who will look at you in the eyes and swear blind you need to take their product or you will fail, or you need to take 200 grams daily of their protein or you won’t progress. I could never stand that as a youngster, so don’t work that way now. Whether you use Pharma-whey™ or another quality whey protein (there are many out there), you don’t need to live on the stuff until you cannot bend over for being so bloated.

A good rule of thumb for me is to get 100 grams of my protein from Pharma-whey™ and 100 grams from solid sources. This way I get the best of both worlds and more than enough protein to grow.

Try read between the lines and don’t believe everything you are told. Stick with what you think sounds like common-sense and you won’t go too far wrong.

Good luck!!
